Nestled in the heart of Calgary's Beltline District is Avenue Tower,  boutique-style loft apartments. High ceilings, exposed heating pipes, concrete walls and floors – these unique suites are gems. And these lofts will definitely test your decorating skills, which one tenant took head-on and came up with a winning look, as her apartment exudes eloquence and sophistication.

I asked her what was the inspiration behind the décor?

"My inspiration came to me as soon as I saw the suite. The open and airiness of the place is wonderful so I wanted to showcase that. Choosing light tones and colors that were cohesive throughout the studio was key. Soft grey, creams, whites were filtered throughout my design. The exposed concrete walls and floors were a major inspiration for this color palette. I threw in a pop of color with the beautiful Urban Barn light lilac couch. The couch was the focus of the room thus I made that wall also a statement. I wanted it to be minimalistic but cozy, thus; I hung a sleek white shelf that I could interchange photos and keepsakes. I strategically placed mirrors around the loft to open up the space and add a third dimension of airiness. Finally, I utilized the space and nooks of the windows as much as I could. I wanted to keep everything off the floors to keep a nice flow through the loft".

I couldn't agree more with her, as these pictures reaffirm her simple yet exquisite décor – she must have read my last blog on "16 tips for furnishing small apartments" … or could it be that I got my inspiration from her décor? – I guess it's a case of what came first the chicken or the egg. I love how she made the features of the apartment work to her advantage – using the space between the window ledges and heating pipes for her pictures and as extra sitting space. The wide window sill she used as her TV stand – pure intelligence and cost savings. Her apartment is not overcrowded and each piece of furniture is strategically placed leaving as much exposed concrete walls and flooring as possible maintaining the authenticity of the place. Oh, by the way, the girl has taste she listens to her music from a gramophone and plays records!
